The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has issued an appeal to churches and religious organizations to open their doors should Tropical Storm Chedeng, international name Songda, unleash its power when it makes landfall in the Philippines Wednesday night.
Chedeng has already been in the Philippines’ area of responsibility and as of 5 am today, the Weather Forecasting Section, Weather Division of PAGASA said that Chedeng is at 540 km east of Borongan, Eastern Samar. The tropical storm has a maximum sustained winds of 105 kps near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kpc. It is a slow moving tropical storm moving at 17 kph west northwest.
NDRRMC executive director Benito Ramos has already reminded the people who will be directly affected by Chedeng to prepare for their basic survival kit. This includes charged extra cellphone batteries so that they can communicate to their loved ones and authorities should they need help because of Chedeng’s wrath.
Other important things to stock up on in the basic survival kit are flashlights, extra batteries and ready to eat meals. Director Ramos said that cooking may be out of the question if the people are already on their rooftop because of the flood waters. So ready to eat meals are a must.
Storms and typhoons are common in a tropical country like the Philippines. This is not the first time that the country will be in the path of typhoons and storms. As this is the case residents who are usually affected by these weather scenarios, especially those in low lying areas an in shorelines, should be prepared for any eventualities.
